ABS Taiwan Committee Leads Industry Discussion on Digitization and Fuel Options for 2020 and Beyond

(Taiwan) The annual ABS Taiwan Regional Committee gathered industry leaders to discuss global challenges facing the maritime sector. The group heard strategies to meet the IMO 2020 Sulfur Cap, as well as a look ahead to 2030, when vessel data will play a significant role in compliance management.

“As the leading class organization in Taiwan, ABS’ strong relationships with shipbuilders, owners and operators enabling many innovative projects incorporating new technologies. The Taiwan committee allows ABS to bring together the diverse expertise of many knowledgeable stakeholders to address the industry’s complex challenges,” said Tony Nassif, ABS Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

ABS presented its innovative work with industry partners on digital technologies, designed to improve delivery of classification services for clients.

The Taiwan Regional Committee allows us to draw on this deep expertise to develop solutions and services that directly respond to the challenges the industry faces today,” said Anchor Chang, Taiwan Committee Chairman and Chairman, Evergreen Marine Corporation.

"ABS has a long history working in collaboration with clients in Taiwan to solve emerging challenges,” said ABS Regional Business Development Director, Taiwan and Hong Kong, Pier Carazzai.  “In the current environment, ABS provides advice and expertise, which helps our clients make key business decisions in managing regulatory and operational demands – from technoeconomic analysis of LNG as fuel, to evaluating multiple scrubber options, to ballast water management compliance assessments.”

The committee also heard about the industry-leading safety milestone ABS accomplished in 2017, reaching one year without a work-related lost-time incident, highlighting its global focus on safety and its mission. 

Committee meetings are a forum for ABS members, owners, operators, charterers, and representatives from flag administrations, owner associations, the shipbuilding and insurance sectors, to engage with ABS leaders and discuss industry issues and advances.  

ABS is the largest classification organization in Taiwan, with 33% of the Taiwanese fleet and a 30% orderbook share. ABS is currently supporting the delivery of a wide range of unique designs incorporating new technology, including container vessels, VLCCs, gas carriers, FSRUs and FLNGs.
