Update on Australia BWM Requirements

Australia now accepts the use of ballast water treatment systems which received Type Approval through the IMO process. Ships which employ a ballast water treatment system need to carry an approved BWM Plan and be surveyed and issued with an International BWM Certificate. Ballast water exchange must take place outside 12 nm from the nearest land and is not permitted within 12 nm of the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef or part of the Torres Strait > Read More.

Additionally:

Chapter 4 of the Biosecurity Regulation 2016 provides requirements for management, reporting and certification for the discharge of ballast water and sediments.
The Biosecurity (Acceptable Ballast Water Exchange Area) Declaration 2016 details areas to conduct ballast water exchange as well as areas where exchange is prohibited.
The Biosecurity (Methods of Ballast Water Management) Approval 2016 specifies the 59 ballast water treatment systems that are accepted for use in Australian waters.
